Don’t know what I can say about an external drive other than it is exactly as advertised. The unit has a number of ports and LaCie gives you several cords so it’s very versatile. I have several LaCie drives and they have always worked the way they are supposed to so I anticipate the same from this one. I was satisfied by the speed and packaging from the seller which is really important.
I have a total of five LaCie external HD’s including this one. I am not a Windows person so can not comment on how LaCie’s are with PC’s but they work great with MAC’s. I have had two issues over the last few years. The first one was totally my goof up. The second one just a week ago was with this model. Suddenly the HD’s icon would not come up on my Desktop. LaCie customer service on the phone was outstanding and I could not ask for better support than what I received. It was quickly determined that the issue was with the external power supply and in two days I received a new one free of charge. As for the HD itself (along with the others I own) I am very happy with them. One thing I really like about the LaCie’s is the FireWire option. On a MAC you can use an outstanding program called SuperDuper! that will give you a bootable back up of your entire OS. In other words, if your internal HD croaks and after it is replaced you just run SuperDuper! and your MAC is back to just as it was prior to the HD failure. No files … northing.. to reinstall. However, to do this you need FireWire and many other external HD’s no longer offer FireWire.
This external hard disk fit right into my Mac system and seems to be working fine with no trouble.
I am really happy with my new Lacie 1.5 TB d2 Quad Hard Drive.
Great design. Easy to setup. Compatible with Apple’s Time Machine Software.
Only surprise: a bit noisy… …compared to my ultra quiet 500 GB LaCie Rugged HD.
I am a graphic designer and photographer and need alot of space since I keep my pics in the RAW format. I have the drive connect to an iMac 24″ Intel and wirelessly to a Macbook. I partitioned the drive for both computers according to their storage capacity and set up time machine. It has been running flawlessly for a month now. I can’t say that for other drives (not Lacie) that I’ve used in the past. There always seemed to be an inordinate lag time waking up or shutting down other drives. This drive just does it’s thing and if it weren’t for the blue light, you wouldn’t even know that it is there. Great product! But what do you expect from Lacie?
I have done so shopping around to add an additional HDD to my computer. I keep 3 things in mind when looking for a new HDD, 1)Price, 2)Speed and 3)Noise. I didn’t to pay and arm and aleg for a 2TB HDD, but i also wanted to make sure that it was fast and quiet. And let me tell you, this drive has delivered in every way across the board. I took minutes to install. I’m running Windows 7 Pro 64bit, so this new drive wasn’t an issue. Once Windows was back up and running, it foind the drive and it was done installing and formatting in seconds. I will primarily use this drive of media (pictures, music and videos) The videos stream off the HDD flawlessly. I would highly recommend this drive, especially now that all future drive will be 4K sectors.
No problems with installation or operation.
Unfortunately, a 2TB drive came on the market shortly after I purchased this one and the 2TB model was only $30 more.
Oh well…
I bought this hard drive for the purpose of expanding storage of my Acer Aspire AH340-UA230N Home Server. As it seems to be the only operating system that there have been no reviews for, I was a bit hesitant to purchase it. However, I have had no issues with this drive. Acer home server makes it very easy to install additional hard drive with front HD bays that are easy to open and require no additional cables. The hard drive was immediately recognized by the operating system, and it took very short time for it to be formated and made available for general use. The hard drive is quiet and thus far very reliable. I can’t comment on how “green” it is, but I have not noticed any significant increase in the power consumption nor in the amount of heat that is emitted by the home server.
Just a couple of words of caution: this hard drive is packaged in a bare-bones package, and comes with no instructions or other information. If you have never installed an internal hard drive, you may want to get some information online about what is the best way of doing it for your compute.
Four weeks after installing this drive, it died. One minute it was working fine, the next not at all. Now, when I plug the drive in, the BIOS does not recognize it even exists. As I said, the drive is only four weeks old.
None of the Cavier Green drives should be used for a RAID 1 installation. If you don’t believe me check out TLER in Wikipedia. In anycase I have first hand experience (bad) trying to use two of these in a brand new Windows 7 Professional computer. The computer crashed 5 times to blue screen of death within 24 hours. I constantly got a REBUILD message from my boot screen. Within 3 days (and many blue screens later) the 2nd RAID drive stopped working. I then searched the internet and found many references to the fact that this drive should not be used for a RAID. I replaced both drives with SEAGATE BARACUDAs …. no problems…..no blue screens of death…. flawless RAID 1 performance. BTW if you install a RAID 1 or have someone else install it I highly recommend downloading Intel’s MATRIX STORAGE CONSOLE to see what is going on.
It is the best thing ever…. if i fill it up soon…ishall get the same one
Installing the hard drive was very simple and fast. Just plug and play. I would recomend this hard drive to anyone.
The item was sent very quickly and was exactly as advertisied. It’s working extremely well right now, but my concern is how long it will hold up under optimum conditions. It has already begun to make a flew clicking noises, which indicate failure problems. This may just be normal, but has me a little nervous since I have hundreds of gig’s backed up on it. That being said, the hard drive does run 24/7.
Thanks
The Iomega Prestige 500GB is the first/only EHD I’ve ever used. Hookup & installation were simple, using the ridiculously minimalist instruction SHEET, which said to install EMC Retrospect Express HD, as well as Mozy Remote Backup. I installed both, moved most pictures & music to the RHD…..and after a couple of days waiting for a remote backup to run on Mozy, I canceled that. (Put it this way: before I moved all the pictures & music, Mozy sai it would be 15 hours to run the initial backup. After moving them, Mozy said the initial backup would take 89 HOURS!!!) But I noticed it was taking my PC longer & longer to wake up, and I kept getting fault messages about RETROSPECT.exe having to shut down or not playing well with others. Thanks to HP support, I was turned on to stevengould dot com’s Cleanup and a friend told me about a good free registry cleaner. Using those two utilities, my PC is much cleaner, but things still ran slow.
I chatted with Iomega, & asked 1)Is EMC Retrospect required? and 2)Should I have saved it to a location on my EHD so it only runs when that is powered up? No, it’s not required, & yes I could uninstall it, then re-install it, saving it to my EHD. I immediately uninstalled EMC Retrospect, and when I next powered up, my PC took 10 minutes less time to wake up. If EMC Retrospect comes around my house, I’ll set the dogs on them(well, the cats, anyway)
I’m happy as heck with this EHD, but I knocked two stars off, 1/2 star off for the lousy user manual, and 1 1/2 stars for recommending EMC Retrospect and Mozy. Stay away from those losers!
Excellent product, very fast in data transfer, has a nice design, it has a medium size. I really liked the producti
i like the design of this external hard drive and the fact that its small and light weight. easy to transport and easy to install. also seagate has a website with customer service chat if you have issues, would def recommend this to someone just looking to backup files.
