Hard disk drive enclosures (sometimes also called cases or caddy's) are a brilliant way to recycle old hard disk drives and create a back up solution for a fraction of the cost of buying a new external storage solution.
Hard disk drive enclosures are available for all types and flavours of hard disk (IDE, SATA, ATA, PATA) and sizes (2.5" from laptops and 3.5" from desktops). There are plenty of good quality HDD cases on the market, most of them, as a bare minimum will connect via USB 2.0 but you can buy some with Firewire or e-SATA as an alternative connection method. (both these alternatives are popular because they support a faster data transfer rate)
The design of Hard Disk Drive Enclosures mean they are really intended to be permanent solution for your salvaged hard disk drive. The reason is simply old hard disk because HDD cases are designed to provide a "protective wrapper" around the hard disk drive and because they need a screwdriver and a little time to set them up. The process is pretty straightforward and typically everything, including the screwdriver, will be supplied with the HDD enclosure.
Whilst the set up is relatively quick and the protection offered by an enclosure is excellent if all you want to do is test and HDD and recover some data from it the process of unscrewing the case, installing the HDD etc. can be a real pain.
If you're a IT support engineer or "systems guy" who has to test lots of HDD's then you'll probably prefer something that's quicker, and easier to use. Ideally you'll also want something that covers all eventualities. HDD cases come in SATA or IDE/ATA versions and there are separate models for HDD's from laptops and from desktops. So just to cover the basic options you could need four different HDD cases!
A much simpler and more convenient option is to use a USB to IDE/SATA cable kit. These kits should be a mandatory addition to any IT support persons bag because they support pretty much every Hard Drive you will encounter. As well as all the cables they also come with a separate power supply "brick" so that you can independently power the hard drive.
The cable kits are not as attractive as the cases, they're not designed to be long term solutions and they offer zero protection to the hard disk drives but it you simply want to know if the HDD is "ok" and want to recover data from it they are hard to beat!
The cable kits work with all current PC operating systems (including Windows 7) and they're happy with Macs too. When you've got a hard disk drive connected to your PC via one of these cable kits your PC will dynamically allocate a new drive letter and assuming the HDD is OK you'll be able to use then just like a large USB flash drive!

This review concerns Acronis True Image v8.0.
A couple of years ago I did some online research and read favorable reviews about True Image. I bought this software direct from the company and received the packaged disk in the mail. I installed it properly, got all current upgrades, and followed all usage instructions. Then I ran my very first disk image backup because I wanted to insure that I preserved all my important programs and data. To be specific, I ran Acronis True Image once and only once(and no other install/uninstall of software or hardware afterward). Running True Image, as directed, damaged my master boot record and made my computer unable to boot the next time I restarted the machine. I looked for several remedies to fix the problem, but in the end I was forced to reinstall my operating system and all of my programs. Thankfully, Acronis didn’t damage the file table on the drive and my data files were still present. I was able to copy them into the fresh OS install. True Image cost me an entire day of trouble and stress that I will never get back.
True Image is designed and marketed to preserve data if your hard drive crashes. Not only does the program not preserve data, it becomes the very source of the problem it’s supposed to mitigate – a hard drive crash.
To add insult to injury they refused to give me a refund – even if I mailed the disk back to them. This makes sense in light of the fact that they are probably already aware that their program is destructive to operating systems. Refunding money to the customers they failed would’ve bankrupted them.
Acronis, refusing to give me a refund, offered to give me another product for free. I pointed out my concern: why would I run any other software from a company that designed True Image – the program that destroyed my operating system. It’s like they were saying, “I know True Image destroyed your operating system but would you like to take a chance on some of our other software that might do the same.”
I have never felt more disappointed, angry and ripped off by a software company. It’s unfortunate that the Acronis company still exists. So much for the free market.

I installed a new hard drive and used this product. It worked great and was very easy to use.
Everything you could want, I had a little trouble with it at first, my own mistake, and the company support was the best you could ask for.
They even did follow up to make sure I was happy with its performance after they helped me get it working perfect.
Did not work with my XP system. Messed everything up & I had to reformat, etc. Not recommended for novices.
