If you are planning to sell, give away or just get rid of your old hard disk, you wouldn't want anyone to see what was stored on your hard disk earlier. You would not want anybody to access your personal files and impair your security.
You may spend a lot of time deleting sensitive files and then decide to format your old hard disk and get rid of the data. This is just not enough. Even after deletion and formatting, data can be retrieved from your old hard disk by anyone who knows about data recovery.
When you delete a file, only the address of the file is deleted. The data on the file continues to exist on the hard disk. What formatting a drive does is that it removes the boot records and leaves your data on the drive. The Operating old hard disk System may display that the disk is empty because it cannot find the links to the files, but they are there all the same.
One way of efficiently erasing all the files on your hard disk is to format it and then fill each bit on the disk with zeros. There are several freeware, shareware and commercial tools available to perform this task for you.
If the data on your old hard disk is so sensitive that you want absolutely no chance of data recovery - you could do one of the following:
1. Perform the format and zero-fill process several times. This should discourage even the most dedicated malicious person attempting data recovery.
2. Another option is to do the format and zero-fill method by opting for a different file system each time. This makes sure your data can never be recovered.
Alternatively, when you buy a new computer, if you know that you would be giving away your hard disk when you upgrade, you could opt for storing data in encrypted mode right from the beginning. When you finally give away your disk, the probability of someone recovering your data is very low as they would not know the string originally used to encrypt the data. You also would not have to go through the entire rigmarole of formatting, deleting etc.
However, be aware that encrypting your data just before formatting the hard disk prior to giving it away will not protect your data. You have to follow the encryption policy right from the outset for this strategy to work.

This review concerns Acronis True Image v8.0.
A couple of years ago I did some online research and read favorable reviews about True Image. I bought this software direct from the company and received the packaged disk in the mail. I installed it properly, got all current upgrades, and followed all usage instructions. Then I ran my very first disk image backup because I wanted to insure that I preserved all my important programs and data. To be specific, I ran Acronis True Image once and only once(and no other install/uninstall of software or hardware afterward). Running True Image, as directed, damaged my master boot record and made my computer unable to boot the next time I restarted the machine. I looked for several remedies to fix the problem, but in the end I was forced to reinstall my operating system and all of my programs. Thankfully, Acronis didn’t damage the file table on the drive and my data files were still present. I was able to copy them into the fresh OS install. True Image cost me an entire day of trouble and stress that I will never get back.
True Image is designed and marketed to preserve data if your hard drive crashes. Not only does the program not preserve data, it becomes the very source of the problem it’s supposed to mitigate – a hard drive crash.
To add insult to injury they refused to give me a refund – even if I mailed the disk back to them. This makes sense in light of the fact that they are probably already aware that their program is destructive to operating systems. Refunding money to the customers they failed would’ve bankrupted them.
Acronis, refusing to give me a refund, offered to give me another product for free. I pointed out my concern: why would I run any other software from a company that designed True Image – the program that destroyed my operating system. It’s like they were saying, “I know True Image destroyed your operating system but would you like to take a chance on some of our other software that might do the same.”
I have never felt more disappointed, angry and ripped off by a software company. It’s unfortunate that the Acronis company still exists. So much for the free market.

I installed a new hard drive and used this product. It worked great and was very easy to use.
Everything you could want, I had a little trouble with it at first, my own mistake, and the company support was the best you could ask for.
They even did follow up to make sure I was happy with its performance after they helped me get it working perfect.
Did not work with my XP system. Messed everything up & I had to reformat, etc. Not recommended for novices.
